12 Lessons Against Ageism: Promoting Dignity and Respect for Older Persons

AnsMed launches national campaign to challenge stereotypes and celebrate aging
October is celebrated globally as the Month for Older Persons, and this year, AnsMed Home Care Ltd is proud to launch a powerful advocacy campaign titled “12 Lessons Against Ageism.”
The campaign aims to educate the public, spark conversation, and promote respect for older adults by challenging the harmful stereotypes, language, and behaviors that contribute to ageism in Ghanaian society.
What is Ageism?
Ageism refers to prejudice, discrimination, or unfair treatment of individuals based on their age — particularly toward older persons.
It can appear in subtle ways, such as:
-
Ignoring an older person’s opinion in family discussions.
-
Assuming seniors can’t learn new things or adapt to technology.
-
Overlooking them for jobs or leadership roles.
-
Providing care that is dismissive or condescending.
Unfortunately, these attitudes often make older persons feel invisible, undervalued, and isolated — even though they are repositories of wisdom, culture, and experience.
Why Ageism Matters
Ageism affects more than just emotions — it impacts health, access to care, and overall well-being.
When older persons are treated as “too old to matter,” they may withdraw socially, delay seeking healthcare, or suffer silently from loneliness and depression.
In Ghana, where family and community ties are highly valued, ageism undermines our cultural principle of respect for elders. AnsMed believes it’s time to bring that respect back — not just in words, but in everyday actions.
About the Campaign: “12 Lessons Against Ageism”
The 12 Lessons Against Ageism campaign runs throughout October and shares three new “lessons” each week across AnsMed’s social media platforms and community engagements.
Each lesson tackles a specific aspect of ageism — from how it sounds in daily language, to its effects in healthcare, families, and workplaces. Through short videos, educational posts, and public reflections, the campaign encourages Ghanaians to:
✅ Recognize the different forms of ageism.
✅ Reflect on personal attitudes toward older persons.
✅ Respond with empathy, inclusion, and respect.
The campaign reminds everyone that aging is not a problem to be solved — it’s a natural and valuable stage of life that deserves appreciation and dignity.
